A: Undergraduate students/research students, master's degree students, and doctoral students may apply for personal use.
Q: I do not understand the extent of the scope of general use in a case of corporate usage.
A: While it is difficult to demarcate the scope clearly, please refer to the following general guidelines.
An institution intending mainly to carry out basic research in a corporation that will not be used in product development may apply for general use.
If there is a possibility of use in product development, we recommend applying for commercial use.
If there are no plans for product development at the time of applying for general use but such plans are developed later, then please be certain to contact the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics at the stage of proceeding to product development. Since an agreement's category may not be changed, you will need to apply anew for commercial use. Whether or not to permit commercial use will be decided through screening based on a summary of the product and other considerations. Sample data on newspaper articles may not be used for commercial purposes. If it is determined as a result of screening that commercial use would present no problems, then you will be able to conclude a new agreement for commercial use.
Q: May we develop products that incorporate text extracted from the corpus?
A: No, you may not. Commercial use is restricted to use of statistical data from the corpus.
Q: I would like to check a sample agreement.
A: See below.
Agreement:Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese License Agreement (DVD, commercial use [Number of Products: Multiple / Number of Users: Extended])
Sample completed agreements:
Q: We would like to pay after receiving the corpus.
A: Please pay in advance.
Q: We plan to purchase the corpus as a laboratory, but we have been told that we may pay only after receipt.
A: If your institution has a system for reimbursement of expenses paid in advance, please use it. If that is not possible, please contact us.
Q: Since we plan to relocate, our mailing address, email address, and other information will change. What kinds of procedures should we complete?
A: After logging in to Chunagon, submit a change application from user settings in the upper right of the screen.
Q: Whom should we contact to provide notice of research results?
A: To send offprints by post or email, send them to the following addresses.
Q: A friend has asked to borrow my DVD for use in writing a paper. May I lend it to my friend?
A: You may not lend the corpus to third parties.
Q: May I quote text extracted from the corpus in a paper?
A: Yes, you may. However, when quoting in a paper text extracted from the corpus unchanged, please clearly indicate the source of the text and keep the quotation within an appropriate extent in light of copyright law and other applicable laws and regulations.

Q: Are the data on the DVD the same as the data used in Chunagon?
A: Yes, they are.
