A: No, you may not.

Application category: Corporate

Q: I work at a corporate research institution. May I apply under the academic application category?

A: No, you may not. We consider academic research institutions to refer to those that have a public nature to some extent, such as junior colleges, universities, graduate schools, independent administrative agencies, national laboratories, and nonprofits.

Q: Our joint development team includes some members who are affiliated with subsidiaries. Do they need separate licenses?

A: If they are members of the same R&D team, then members who are affiliated with subsidiaries may use the corpus under a single license.
However, this is permitted only when the person responsible for management is made clear and use is within a scope that he or she may manage. When filling out the application form, indicate the specific scope of use (e.g., user section, number of users). We will consider the application and decide whether or not to approve it.

Q: Can the corpus be used in the following way under a single license?

* Copied from media to a hard drive
Copying to hard drives is anticipated for convenience' sake in experimentation and other activities.

* Changing (modifying) the format of the data
Using the data in different formats is anticipated in experimentation and other activities.

* Accessing the data from multiple computers (transmission between computers)
Accessing the data on one computer from multiple other computers is anticipated.

* Copying it to multiple users' computers

A: All of these uses are permitted as long as they are conducted within the scope permitted under the agreement.

Application category: Academic

Q: The university where I work does not have organizational units called "laboratories." May we apply as a "research department"?

A: You may apply as a research department if it is the smallest unit in the organization. Apply by entering the name of the person responsible for management of actual use of the corpus as the user and indicating on the application form the scope of users (e.g., XX Seminar, ___ persons).

Q: When applying for laboratory use, must the "User" be the formal representative of the institution?

A: There is no need to apply in the name of the research department head, faculty head, etc. in the case of a university. Apply in the name of the person responsible for management of actual use of the corpus. Conclude the agreement in the name of a person authorized to conclude the agreement.

Q: We are considering applying for laboratory use. What should we do if the "User" indicated on the application form transfers to another institution?

A: In the event of a change in the affiliation of the person responsible for management of laboratory use, usage authorization may be succeeded by the successor as leader of the laboratory. In such a case, please inform us of the name of the leader who will be the new person responsible for management of use. If the transferred teacher desires to continue use, he or she should submit a new application.

Q: May I let graduate students under my guidance use the corpus?

A: Graduate students may use the corpus if they are affiliated with a laboratory that has concluded a usage agreement. However, please indicate on the application form the fact that it will be used in guidance of students.

Q: I am a university undergraduate student. May I apply for the academic version of the DVD?

A: Undergraduate students/research students, master's degree students, and doctoral students may apply for personal use.

Application category: Commercial use

Q: I do not understand the extent of the scope of general use in a case of corporate usage.

A: While it is difficult to demarcate the scope clearly, please refer to the following general guidelines.
An institution intending mainly to carry out basic research in a corporation that will not be used in product development may apply for general use.
If there is a possibility of use in product development, we recommend applying for commercial use.
If there are no plans for product development at the time of applying for general use but such plans are developed later, then please be certain to contact the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics at the stage of proceeding to product development. Since an agreement's category may not be changed, you will need to apply anew for commercial use. Whether or not to permit commercial use will be decided through screening based on a summary of the product and other considerations. Sample data on newspaper articles may not be used for commercial purposes. If it is determined as a result of screening that commercial use would present no problems, then you will be able to conclude a new agreement for commercial use.

Q: May we develop products that incorporate text extracted from the corpus?

A: No, you may not. Commercial use is restricted to use of statistical data from the corpus.
